Mike and Claire Sardina, the dynamic duo behind the Neil Diamond tribute band Lightning & Thunder, captivated audiences for decades with their passionate performances. Their journey together, both personal and professional, became a touching story of love, perseverance, and music, particularly after the 2008 release of Song Sung Blue, a documentary that explored their struggles and shared devotion to music.
A Meeting That Sparked a Lifelong Bond
The Sardinas’ love story began in 1987 when Claire auditioned for Mike’s band. By 1989, they had formed their own Neil Diamond tribute band, and their professional collaboration quickly blossomed into romance. The couple married in 1994 at the Milwaukee State Fair, with 1,000 fans attending their special day. Their chemistry on and off stage resonated with their audiences, making Lightning & Thunder a beloved fixture in the tribute band world.
Overcoming Challenges Together
Offstage, the couple faced numerous challenges. In 1998, Mike suffered a heart attack, and the following year, Claire was struck by an out-of-control car, resulting in a devastating injury that severed her foot. Despite the severity of the accident, Claire returned to performing just months later, showing incredible resilience and refusing to let the setback derail her passion for music.
Mike’s Passing and Claire’s Dedication to His Legacy
In 2006, tragedy struck when Mike passed away after a fall at home. Claire, devastated by the loss of her partner in life and music, continued to perform in honor of his memory. Years later, Claire had the opportunity to meet Neil Diamond, and she shared with him that Mike had “lived for that moment,” reflecting the deep connection Mike had with the music and the icon he adored.
Claire’s Ongoing Music Career
Today, Claire continues to honor Mike’s legacy by performing under the name Thunder After Lightning with Toney Luciano. She remains active in the music industry, not only performing but also contributing to the making of Song Sung Blue. Claire has attended premieres and participated in performances, including a memorable performance with Hugh Jackman at the film’s New York premiere.
Recognition and Tributes to Their Legacy
In 2025, Claire and Mike were posthumously honored with the WAMI Lifetime Achievement Award, a testament to their lasting impact on the music world. Claire, while continuing to make music, has also been dedicated to preserving their shared legacy. She paid a heartfelt tribute to Mike at the Song Sung Blue Milwaukee premiere, reflecting on their love, their journey, and the incredible achievements they accomplished together.
