A Bold Role in a Groundbreaking Biopic Series
Anna Sawai, 33, has been announced as the actress who will portray Yoko Ono in a highly anticipated Beatles biopic series directed by Sam Mendes. The series will span four films, each told from the perspective of a different Beatles band member. All four films are scheduled for simultaneous release in April 2028, providing a unique and multifaceted look at the iconic band through their individual lenses. Sawai’s casting as Yoko Ono marks a significant and exciting chapter in her career.
A New Perspective on Yoko Ono
In discussing her role as Yoko Ono, Sawai described the Japanese artist and peace activist as an inspirational figure. She emphasized that many people don’t truly understand Ono’s story and the incredible influence she had, both as an artist and as John Lennon’s partner. Sawai praised Ono’s independence and boldness, pointing out that she was unfairly vilified by some fans who didn’t want to see her as part of Lennon’s life.
“I think a lot of people still don’t know the real story of Yoko’s life and the impact she had, both as an artist and as a woman of immense strength,” Sawai said. “I’m really honored to bring her story to the screen in a way that reflects the truth of who she was.”
A Rising Star in Hollywood
Sawai’s casting in this prominent role follows a string of career milestones. In 2024, she won an Emmy for her captivating performance as Lady Mariko in the FX series Shōgun. Just a year later, she took home a Golden Globe in 2025 for the same role. Reflecting on her rapid rise in the entertainment industry, Sawai expressed gratitude for her success and the newfound ability to choose roles that are both meaningful and impactful.
“I feel incredibly fortunate,” Sawai said. “The last few years have been a whirlwind, and now, I’m in a position where I can choose roles that really speak to me and offer a chance to contribute something special to the industry.”
Current Projects and Future Plans
Sawai’s work isn’t slowing down anytime soon. She recently attended the season 2 premiere of her Apple TV series Monarch: Legacy of Monsters in Los Angeles on February 19. Returning to the show after an eventful awards season, Sawai described the experience as grounding and a great opportunity to reconnect with her role.
The second season of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters will be available for streaming on Apple TV starting February 27, adding another exciting project to Sawai’s already impressive slate.
